UNSW Startup Year: Roadmap and Timeline

Applications for UNSW Startup Year are closing soon – we’ve told you all about the nitty gritty details, how to apply, how exciting the new Government initiative is, and all the reasons we think you should join us for this once-in-a-lifetime program.

You might be sitting there, excited about the possibilities that UNSW Startup Year can offer you, but you might also be asking yourself - “Do I have the time for this?”

It’s common to wonder about the time commitment required when you’re signing up for a new course, so we’re here to break down for you and show you that UNSW Startup Year is absolutely worth your time!

The Time Commitment

UNSW Startup Year is designed as a one-year post graduate program – through the year, you'll be working towards a Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship, with a full-time workload.

The goal of UNSW Startup Year is designed to support you launch your startup – so all the work, tutorials and elements are designed to be practical steps of business growth. As the saying goes, you get out what you put in!

Flexibility Forward

We know that life is bigger than a single study commitment. We have designed this program with flexibility in mind, allowing you to make the most of this experience, without putting the rest of your life on pause.

To make sure that the course fits into your life, and not the other way around, most lectures are after-hours and online. They’ll also be recorded if you're not able to make it to the live stream.

The in-person tutorials and networking opportunities will be stacked to one or two set days a week, allowing you to focus your time and have a work – startup – life balance.

What will my year look like?

A full-time study workload is needed to meet the requirements of the post-graduate qualification that you’ll be walking away with (a GO8 qual, no less!)

Remember: this entire program has been created to build your startup – it’s far from a stock-standard post-grad course – consider this a valuable time investment in your startup success! You’ll be actively working on your own business, and we’re here to help make that happen.

For the first two terms of the program, there will be at least two days per week of active engagement with your instructors and mentors.

In the third term, this will turn into at least one day of active engagement, as the practical side will really be taking off as we head toward the finish line!

Outside of this, it’s up to you to make the time for the required work – like any other study adventure, you'll need to find time in your schedule for research, reading, preparation, and assessment tasks.

Course Design

The Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship offers a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. You will learn about:

  • Problem & Idea Validation

  • Customer Discovery and Acquisition

  • Business Modelling and Strategy

  • Iterative Product Design, Development and Innovation

  • Entrepreneurial Finance and Legal requirements

  • Industry Experience via Industry Placement in a Startup company
