How can Student Interns Fuel your Business Success!

UNSW Science – Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Program

Mentor, collaborate and work with the next generation of science students.

The Faculty of Science at UNSW offers undergraduate students studying Science with the opportunity to complete an internship as part of their Science degree through the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Program. A little bit about WIL: it’s an extremely flexible program where students can undertake a placement of 105 – 210 hours in a workplace during a term or over two terms, either virtually or in-person.

  • Total investment cost for the WIL program: the Science WIL placement students can either be paid or unpaid - this is a decision made by the organisation. If the placements are unpaid, there is no cost for an organisation to take part in the program.

  • The host organisation responsibilities during the WIL placement are:

    1. Provide authentic work commensurate with the level and experience of your intern, with tasks, responsibilities and business interactions directly linked to the student’s chosen field.

    1. Provide a safe working environment for the intern and assist them in completing a short risk assessment activity at the start of the placement.

    1. Discuss the intern’s goals for their workplace experience and assist them in completing a Placement Plan activity on their first day.

    1. Submit a brief student evaluation survey at the conclusion of the internship.

  • UNSW Science will:

    1. Provide students with professional development training relevant to their placement.

    1. Support students during the experience through virtual workshops and feedback on professional development assessments.

    1. Be available to communicate with the supervisor and the student throughout the placement.

    1. Help to address any issues that may arise throughout the placement.

The WIL program is structured to enhance and support students and partner organisations, and we strive to ensure the program is mutually beneficial. If you are interested in hosting UNSW undergraduate science students for internships, please complete this Expression of Interest Form.

UNSW Media - Collaborative Client Project

The Collaborative Production Project is a 9-week course running 27th May to 22 August 2024, where students' consult with a Start-up/Client to design media appropriate for the start-up's/client's needs. A collaborative working relationship between start-up and the student group is required. Start-ups will need to be available for at least 30 mins a week for student contact throughout the process (at flexible times, in-person, or via skype/zoom/teams or email). The project will model the experience of a real-life creative consultancy with a business to produce a creative media solution (e.g., video) to a business problem. Students will be choosing the start-up they would like to work with based on the information gathered via this application. If selected, you will be contacted by a student group during the first two weeks of the course. (27th May to 13th June, 2024)

Note: It will not be possible to work with a group of students if you are overseas or travelling (27th May to 22 August 2024.) Timezone differences and a lack of in-person contact can be problematic for both the students and the client.

As there are only a limited number of student groups participating it is possible that you will not be

selected/contacted this round. There will however be other opportunities to participate in the future and other ways to connect with UNSW (University of NSW) media students if you require their production services. For example, by requesting to join "UNSW Facebook Group-Freelance Market" you will be able to connect directly to Media Production students seeking professional experience and employment.

  • Following are the key stages of production.

    Stage 1 Brief finalised

    Stage 2 Look & Feel/ Mood board/style finalised

  • Stage 3 Draft finalised

  • Stage 4 Final Delivery

Please complete and return this application form by Friday 10th May 2024.
